I have been trying to find a person to do a small job for me,replacing steps, everyone I call or email off ebrandon do not reply and if they do they dont show up or follow up. Is there not anyone in a place a big as Brandon to get someone to help?

I do notice there are still a few that advertise in the Brandon Sun - back page.

Yup tried a couple from paper. One came and never returned the other never showed up for an estimate.

I've had this problem with any work that requires quotes. Basements, roofs, bathrooms... you name it. It's frustrating that even if you can come out to take a look, you can't extract a quote from them after that!! Some jobs have taken me a year or more to finally find someone who will quote the job and then show up to do the work, despite me politely chasing them.

They may be able to help. They build fences and decks.

We are retired but do odd jobs. I hear the frustration of those asking for quotes. There is another side to the street.  
 
Often the job is so small it is more of a nuisance. In one case the homeowners have been asking me for quotes over three years. I have been warned that they don’t pay so demand money up front. They phone or text and ask for another quote. It takes time to quote. I am tempted to give such a ridiculous they will ask someone else. If you have no money to even pay for materials, please don’t keep asking for quotes.  
 
The next frustration is once you start you should be able to snap your fingers complete it under cost of quote and have it look better than they expect. One lady even expected laminate flooring to be put into bedroom while bed and furniture remained in the room.  
 
That said, I have met many wonderful people who were a pleasure to help out.

The key word here is "handyman" which I guess your looking for cheap? If your having problems maybe just get the e tra cash and get a qualified contractor slot of times cheap ain't always better.

Not necessarily looking for cheap. But most contractors I talked to or emailed never got back to me.

I hear you. I can completely understand that when it's small jobs. I don't know about the OP, but I know I'm often looking for quotes on big jobs - one job I eventually spent $30k on - which isn't chump change in my books. Or roofing quotes that are in the $5K+ range (an average price I assume). But I can't even get quotes for those types of things.  
 
So frustrating. I understand they're busy. Then tell me, "I'm too busy. I can't come," instead of stringing me along and telling me you'll come, or you'll give me a quote, and never do.

I needed a shingles done and had 3 quotes in a couple days (a couple even made me laugh) and had it done the following week. Had a kitchen reno done last winter and same thing but took a little longer.  
 
Find a good contractor that does good work and call them, there are several in the City. But don't always expect to get the work done tomorrow, the good ones are extremely busy. After all that is why they are good...

I've been trying for weeks to get roofing quotes. Really, I'm a pretty laid back person and I don't think I'm difficult to work with (maybe that's my problem??) and it happens with every. single. tradesperson (except plumbers... they always seem to come when called!!).  
 
Getting basement work was like a year-long process to find, quote and hire someone. (for the record, I had 4!!! people come out to do quotes - including one I paid mileage on from Winnipeg because I couldn't get any local guys to quote me - who never provided quotes in the end).  
 
I thought it was because I was a women, so this time I've been getting my husband to deal with them, and he's having about as much luck as me. So it's not that.  
 
I'm sorry I sound exasperated, but it's truly frustrating. It doesn't seem to matter who I call. I've tried "highly recommended" people mentioned in other threads. I've tried people with ads. I've tried people recommended to me by friends. It doesn't seem to make a lick of difference.
