Anyone know if you can have a lawyer write a letter on your behalf to a person who is spreading rumours? There are several witnesses who have heard this specific person spread the malicious rumour.

It’s a crime, but usually only gets to court if:  
1) you have proof (or 3+ witnesses) it happened  
2) you have proof that it harmed you (such as missing out on job opportunities for example)  
 
Not sure what a lawyer would need before writing a letter, but I guarantee they’ll want money

people gossiping and spreading rumours means nothing in terms of criminal matters. People do it all the time. Defamation: libel and slander are the criminal code terms and certain criteria must be met in order for it to be considered "against the law".  
 
Is this rumour being published?  
Is this rumour causing you to suffer financial loss?  
Are you being accused of having a contagious disease or are you being accused of a crime?  
Is this rumour attacking you position in your workplace?  
 
You can go to a lawyer and spend a LOT of money and most likely nothing will be done. If you wish to proceed if the rumour meets the criteria of defamation then it will likely be a civil suit you would pursue.

Rumour was about me being unfaithful to my partner! Which is NOT TRUE! Was said in front of several others and has since caused a pile of unnecessary problems between my partner and I!! It has caused major trouble with a once very happy relationship! I don’t know what else to do! I want this evil person to know just what it is they have done!!

I swear it does. Just not right away. Avoid those people and carry on. It’s super hard but you must be kind to you. What you feel now the anger the shock the sadness the endless whys are normal.

People are just jealous, because you have a great relationship with your partner! I wouldnt waste my time with people like that!!

So I would be curious to know what you are worried about.

The fact that the person thinks it’s okay to make such false accusations!! I would like for them to have the fear of god put into them for spreading such horrible things about me! In my eyes it’s slander and you don’t go around trying to ruin someone’s life!

Sounds like somebody is jealous of your happiness. If it’s caused your partner to really question your loyalty and trust then maybe take your partner by the hand and confront the person who started all of it. Ask that person face to face, I bet the story will change. Stay positive!

Disagree that what has happened to you is awful but there isn’t much or anything a lawyer is going to do and writing a threatening letter isn’t likely to happen.
