I am fairly new at buying on-line and always skeptical about using my mastercard. Can you tell me EXACTLY how pay pal works? Is it safer than credit card payments? I am always scared to enter my credit card number in case something happens, but if pay pal is safer, where they can't get any more money from you regardless, then I would be interested in paying that way. Or, is there another way to pay on-line that is super safe.

You link your bank account and/or credit card to your PayPal account to start. When you pay with PayPal they act as a middle man so the seller doesn't have any of your account numbers and they can't be stolen if the seller is hacked. It can also be advantageous because you can pay directly from a bank account or with a card the seller might not not directly accept like American Express. PayPal also has a strong refund policy if what you recieved wasn't as it is described.

Agree with Scottrs. I use PayPal for most of my online purchases. I tend to make a lot of low priced purchases on line so I often will load a hundred or two on my paypal balance so I don't have so many transactions on my credit card or bank account. PayPal also gives you some buyer protection.

by a friend who works at a bank to not use PayPal as they get hacked quite a bit.  
I have a RBC Visa card if I make any online purchases but I don't look for goods to buy, i just use it for necessary items.

Mastercard and never had a problem. I don't like links to my bank account, but paypal is probably just as secure.

Have none of you heard or looked in to the fraud protection that comes with your credit card?? You are pretty safe using your credit card online and they have very good systems in place are pretty good at identifying fraudulent transactions before you even do. I've been hacked before overseas and MasterCard notified me and took care of it all no problem. PayPal on the other hand can be a nightmare if you ever have to dispute or just in general have to communicate with them. I would gladly use my credit card over PayPal any day but I do use both just not so much PayPal unless I'm eBaying.

I agree with Big Mack. The fraud protection for most credit cards is pretty robust. You're at least as safe using your credit card directly as you are using PayPal. I would never, ever, ever link something like PayPal to my bank account.  
 
The other part to consider, especially if you're trying to support local merchants, are the fees. I'm under the impression that the "cut" PayPal takes is higher than credit cards. So I always think twice about paying via PayPal if they offer direct credit card entry for that reason.

Have used both for almost 20 years...never had an issue with either one. If you are doing lots of online transactions with PayPal, just run a separate bank account although some people don’t want the bother but there’s not much cost. That’s what we did when we sold stuff online and took PayPal payment. Then just transfer over as needed when payment comes in or goes out.

I got a KOHO card for online purchases. It’s a visa you load and use, takes five seconds to add funds and works exactly like a credit card. You are pretty safe using a normal credit card though. The fraud protection is good.

I use PayPal for the strong return policy, Amazon is the exception, I use my MasterCard directly with amazon because they also have a very strong return policy. For PayPal if there is ever any issue what so ever you can normally return it, even if on their website it states that they don’t accept returns. If it’s damaged or not as described I have never had any issues making a claim through PayPal seamlessly getting a return without even having to make a phone call, happens a lot when you buy stuff from eBay and alibaba. All communications can be recorded and saved and reviewed by PayPal staff so there is never a concern of dealing with wish washy outlets that play games. If the seller doesn’t respond to PayPal the return is automatically in your favour. I don’t trust my credit card to stand up for me more then my bank does, the bank will never refund you money unless they “have” to and don’t forget about the effort to make a claim through your bank and then have the provide online backup and proof of what you bought... what a pain

i like the way your thinking nice moustache but we never had problem with paypal and credit together or seperate as the are also linked together if any transaction goes on credit card it sends message to qifes phone letting her know what and when went through on credit card transaction if its not her she lets mastercard know and they take care of it
