You don’t know what someone else is going though, why treat the people you live next to so badly? Hmmmm, when my grandparents were alive which was only about 19 years ago, there was such a thing as neighbors helping each other during a time of crisis. “Barn raising” in the older days…NOW, it’s let’s see if we can f@&$ over our next door “friends” any way we can. “Oh, your husband passed away” too bad, “blow your own snow!”, and “cut your own grass”. “ say kids, why don’t you go over next door and tear up the driveway in front of their house….the man that used to live there is gone now, we can torcher those two women that live there, no problem now” Funny…there is no “hey, do you need some help? We have 6 kids here that might be able to help with your shovelling or grass or SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS HE WAS SO YOUNG!” No words for the disappointment that fills me, as I am a good person who only wants to make others happy and have received only the meanest actions in return. You know who you are, unfortunately you will most likely never read this as you are just those kind of people, and you most definitely would never feel bad about what you have done.

sorry you are facing this. Sadly this seems to be the way our world is heading. One thing I teach younger people I meet , is that , from experience, most people are for themselves and majority will put themselves before anyone else. It’s facts. Sooner we learn that, the easier life will be. That doesn’t give us the right to treat others like garbage though. We still need to be a light wherever we go - but understand that it most likely won’t be reciprocated.  
 
Sorry for the struggles

At the risk of over-simplifying things, it's at least partially, IMO, because we are socialized to be consumers. Giving back, whether it be time, money, or labour, isn't prioritized generally.  
 
I could write an essay on the social conditions that likely contributed to it, but it's reoccurring theme. Just ask anyone who is trying to recruit volunteers, helpers, donations etc. There as never been more people, but most volunteer-based organizations are screaming for volunteers and some have shut down (and many risk shutting down, then they scrape together a few more volunteers, and the cycle repeats).

This is how our world seems to run now. Lots of yelling and screaming and look at me attitudes. We even have political people wanting to eliminate immigrants! Everything is going the extreme route. Russia and Israel are killing everyday. No one wants to help they only want power. Sad really.
