buying a carpet shampooer

I am looking to buy a small carpet shampooer for my house and wondered if there are any that you have tried and loved.
I have 3 pets and it will be mostly for spot cleaning and maybe stairs.
I know there are a few available so I want to get one that is going to do the job properly.
