Will mean more than references in your case.
Being a stay at home parent for years actually is a very good reference in itself, as long as you present yourself well, demonstrate energy and ambition, organization and other things that will lend them self to the job you are applying for.
When you think of it, stay at home parents are accountants, first aid responders, nannies, chefs, CEO of a house hold, among many other titles. I would not play that up too much of course, the one hiring may take that as a sign you are cocky.
If you have done any volunteer work over the years at kids schools or in the community, use those people as references. A good friend can make a great character reference too.
Above all you need to sell yourself because you do not have recent work experience.
Good luck to you.
