i used to hear the same, oh they are not needed anymore or put upon request but honestly now i look at resumes if i have lots of candidates and want to check references the people who make me have to ask for their references will go in the maybe pile, I only go through the maybe pile after i have interviewed the 1st choice pile and didnt find anyone who stood out soooo, basically imho if you choose not to list them you are rarely getting a chance to talk to me
really when it comes to resumes ALL the little things matter!
what i like is a simple to the point resume that tells me what kind of stuff you have done, how long you stayed at your jobs and a simple cover letter that tells me a bit about you and all relevant phone numbers, in a simple easy to read format, that will get you an interview where i like a good comfortable attitude, will to show up,work and learn, along with as much relevant skills as possible, but a good attitude will trump lots of knowledge imo, i am not formally trained HR person but that is what i look for
