If I wanted to switch to 5ghz, I assume I'd have to upgrade my router, as from what I can see, there's no option for it in the settings anywhere. Maybe I'll have to get in contact with BellMTS for that... as much as I'm sick of their customer service, I'd rather not have to switch providers if I don't have to! May even downgrade the package, if it'll give me the same speeds for less money. I feel like what package you have doesn't actually affect your speed if your area is swamped with other routers. :/ " |

First off, if you have an android phone or windows 10 machine (maybe 8 as well, but I am not sure), go into the app store and look for an app called Wifi Analyzer. It will show you a map of the wifi situation in your area. Where everyone is, and thus which is likely your best option. Same goes for the 5ghz band.
You don''t always need to upgrade to access that band. Some units (like my Arris gateway, cable) can do one or the other, but not both at the same time.
You should also consider that many older wifi devices are 2.4 only, AND that the 5ghz band's range is much more limited.
The 5ghz works for my laptop and phone, and I have a 2.4ghz router in AP mode for the older stuff that isn''t used much anyway (like a printer).
If in doubt, call tech support. Or if you have a friend or someone else that is technologicly knowledgable, even better.
