Manitoba's Tuition Freeze
2/13/2007 at 1:09 PM
As you may or may not know, last week was the "Day of Action" on the BU Campus. BUSU and the CFS had their 'national day of protest' for more state spending on universities, and in support of the tuition freeze policy (which they've long been a supporter of).
I and a few friends were out at the day of action, handing out pamphleture which criticized the Tuition Freeze, because we feel it has hurt the quality of our education.
Right now, Brandon University is 47th out of 47 in the MacLean's ranking. BU's budget is 1 million dollars short, and they have 14 million dollars in back maitenance. Their operating costs increase between 5 to 9 percent per year, and usually get 1 to 3 percent funding increase from the provincial government. This creates a sometimes large funding gap, that they have to cut the quality of their services to make up.
Is it just me, or is this policy just destructive and ill thought out? Let me know what you think, lets have a good discussion.
