Maple Leaf closing St. Boniface plant
By Sun Media (Winnipeg Sun)
Maple Leaf Foods is closing its primary pork processing facility on Marion Street in Winnipeg in October, the company announced today.
The closure is part of Maple Leaf's attempt to centralize its processing operations in Brandon by the end of 2009. A second shift will be added to the Brandon plant, bumping the number of workers there to 2,800.
The Marion Street plant, slated to close Oct. 26, employs 145 people and processed 15,000 to 20,000 hogs a week, a press release stated.
Maple Leaf will offer salaried employees other positions, and attempt to provide jobs at other regional plants for hourly workers.
Financial support, and outplacement and employment counselling will be offered to the workers, the company said.
