Copyright Reform
12/10/2007 at 1:33 PM
As some may be aware, Jim Prentice is expected to release a new copyright reform bill tomorrow on Dec. 11. The big deal is that it is expected to be crafted to meet American pressure for a 'Canadian DMCA'.
For those unfamiliar with America's DMCA legislation, the biggest complaint against it is around 'anti-circumvention' technology. 'Anti-circumvention' technology is anything that lets you make a copy of something with copy protection on it. The big deal is that it effectively allows the copyright holder to define what fair-use means, regardless what copyright law might say. Anything allowing you to make backup copies, transfer a CD or DVD to your computer or MP3 player, and Tivo can all be considered 'anti-circumvention' technologies. A company can even prevent the inclusion of any lengths of a work in parodies and criticism's of the work through the 'anti-circumvention' clause. This is, to me, intolerable and I was looking for some help in being able to present the problems this represents to lay people in a clear and straight-forward manner.
If I can get some feedback on what parts of the above do and do not make sense and how to make it more accessible that would be very much appreciated, thanks.
