Racism IS a problem in every society but this isn''t about race. Middle Eastern people can be of any religion they please, not just Muslim and not just Muslims who choose to cover their faces.
In the interest of furthering discussion, I wonder how many violent crimes have been committed by someone wearing a religious face covering. Certainly there haven''t been any on a bus in Canada. It is such a small percentage of our population that this might be misplaced concern, if a person really is only worried about public safety. Edited by pinkflamingos, 2017-10-30 16:12:57" |

Thread wasn''t meant to debate the risk to society at large where the niqab or burqua could be used to disguise individuals who have terrorist intent. Although I''m sure that such actions have occurred in the past somewhere. I''m of the opinion that the burqua, niqab comes from barbaric times and it''s intent was to oppress females and am surprised that in Canada we seem to be oblivious to what the face covering stands for and as such are unable or unwilling to speak and defend those imprisonned in this barberic practice. I understand and I respect your opinion. I just feel that it is a slippery slope to give the government the power to decide what we can and cannot wear in our day to day lives. And it is relevant to bring up the safety issue since people in this very thread have implied that it is somehow unsafe to have a veiled person on the bus, in a bank, etc.
And again, it is also presumptuous to assume everybody who wears it is oppressed. We simply do not know that. Even if it is rooted in a misogynistic ideal, you could argue that so are stay at home mothers. It used to be that women had to stay home and raise their kids. And now, they can still choose to be a stay at home mom if they want to. How can we know that every woman wearing a niqab did not also choose to do so of her own free will? " |

Also respect your position and understand your concern regarding the government. I also understand that some women are verbally and physically abused by spouses/partners. There are systems and organizations to help those women who find themselves in those situation. An abused woman in Canada (non muslim) is not abused, be-littled, ridiculed and made to feel inferior because of our culture. However, not all muslims, but those strict with culture and religion will often demand that their spouses and young daughters (age of puberty) must wear a niqab or burka or else! Now, do some muslim women wear the niqab/burka out of choice? Of course they do! Those that you see interviewed on CBC while riding a bus by themselves are doing it out choice, for sure! Why? Not sure, but I would think that they''re doing it for political reasons. They''re doing it so they can promote their culture in a welcoming Western democracy. As obviously free, strong willed women they should instead fight for women''s equality within their culture instead of maybe unkowingly promoting oppression against their gender. I think they get a kick out of the publicity maybe?, not sure. One thing that I know though is that the woman who is out and about wearing a burka accompanied by one or several males is most certainly in an oppressed situation and has no voice and will not be allowed to be interviewed by CBC or if she is it''ll be with husbands instructions of saying she wears the burka out of her own choice. Do you really think that a 13 year old girl living in Canada really wants to cover up? Should we allow this or is this child abuse? The security risks may be enough to consider a ban, but to me the oppression and what it stands for is more than enough for Canadians to maybe consider amending the charter to ensure that nothing, no religion or culture trumps equality of the sexes. Equality should be at the top of the list of our charter and unfortunately it''s not and Quebec will likely fail in it's attempt to ban the Niqab and Burka!
