I have an intense phobia of medical procedures even though I know it will be fine. I was a candidate for IV sedation to remove a root and a tooth but due to my phobia, they considered it unsafe to even continue to sedation and stopped the procedure. I could not control by breathing to the point where I was shaking so bad it felt like I was having convulsions.  
 
Has anybody had a severe phobia and gone through a similar experience. If so, please PM me so I can receive further advise on how other got through this. I realize how silly this is but my response and reaction is so out of control I am seriously @#$@ed if I don't get this sorted out. I have taken oral medications before but again, due to severe unfounded phobia, the medications had virtually no effect. In fact they seemed to agitate me even more.  
 
Any shared experience is appreciated.

P.S. I get that this is actually kind of funny and am trying to find the humor in this, so feel free to crack some fun at the situation.

I’ve always had a lot of anxiety when it comes to needles. Not quite as severe as your phobia but it sucks to say the least. I just had 4 fillings done here in Brandon with Nitrous Sedation and I still had a panic attack on the table. They didn’t have me sedated enough so when they went to freeze me I felt the needle in my upper jaw and started hyperventilating and spasming on the table. Needless to say they turned up the nitrous but I was still really freaked out. I can’t even imagine trying to get fillings done without nitrous I would actually rather die.

I went to Dr. Duprat at the Brandon surgical centre. I was getting all 4 wisdom teeth pulled, and asked to be put under. They had to do it at the hospital. I was too scared to get it done while I was awake at all.

I had iv sedation at princess dental. I was completely fine. Best experience ever

Have you ever tried something like Ativan before a procedure to relax you? I have a lot of anxiety with dental procedures, not like yourself, but bad enough that I find it’s best if I take something before hand to relax me. Even a bit of gravol is enough to relax me. I still get a little shaky, but am able to control the anxiety.

Just out of curiosity is it more money for sedation dental work? And how much more? Iv had a few cavities I keep meaning to get done bit I'm so anxious getting dental work I just keep putting it off

Yes it costs a bit more but I would say it’s worth it. To get my 4 fillings done with IV sedation was $1600 before insurance, and I only ended up paying $387 total. It costs more but it’s one thing I’d rather not skimp on

I have tried oral meds before but the phobia releases enough adrenaline to counter the meds and make them useless. Dr has given me different meds to try and told me to seek out a cognitive behaviour counseller.  
 
Iv sedation is $900 for two extractions so there is a lot of cost but worth it if it gets the job done. My issue is relaxing so they can actually administer the iv in a safe fashion
