So I’ve finally had it with a certain franchise coffee and want to go back to grinding my own beans. However it’s been years since I did this. So I need to buy a new grinder. We drink a fair bit of coffee. A pot a day and sometimes more in the winter. Im looking for some recommendations for grinders? Also, Where do you get your beans? I usually favour a dark roast but am open to try other.

We bought an electric grinder from Wallmart quite a few years back, it holds about 6 tablespoons of beans, and has never given us any grief. Looked for a name on it but the only thing I found was made in China. We've used it for beans as well as grinding spices.  
 
Stores used to carry different beans in bulk, so a person could buy different flavors if you are into that, most of those, as well as in store grinders seem to have disappeared, but you can still buy beans in sealed bags in most coffee isles.  
 
If you are into flavoured coffees, Bulk Barn does carry different flavors.

If your buying quality beans you will want to treat them right. That means use a good ceramic plate burr grinder. Minimize heat damage in beans and preserves the flavour.

If your not travelling forbidden flavours has a great selection of beans if you go to winnipeg than I suggest second cup

We use this daily. Beans from forbidden flavour, starbucks from costco, the roastery in headingly are all good places for beans. We also have a commercial grinder off ebay and use turkish grind for best flavour

We bought a cuisiart grinder from Canadian Tire. Several in our family have the same grinder.  
 
We buy Java club coffee from Costco.

Definitely for the best coffee experience use a burr grinder, and buy fresh roasted coffee. Most of what you buy in store is stale (coffee is best within the month after it was roasted). There's a local guy thats just started up a roastary called Cornerstone Coffee in the area (oak lake) that's roasting all different flavors of coffee (Columbian and Mexican are my favorites!), you can order it on his website online and he can deliver to Brandon to save on shipping fee (Just choose a pickup location in Brandon at checkout). Best coffee I've ever had!

Does Forbidden still roast their own beans? (I remember the roaster was at their 34th street location, but they don't have that location anymore... so do they still roast?)  
 
Love the local business side of things. Personally we buy our beans at Costco and grind them at home using a regular Hamilton Beach grinder. My parents, on the other hand still percolate and I find that the flavours are very different! Nothing quite like the percolated kind!

Forbidden Flavours Still roasts their own beans. Location for roasting has moved, but they are still Brandon and fresh roasted. Lots of variety from signal origin, to blends and flavours and decaf coffee ( decaf is Swiss water process so no chemicals used to extract the caffeine)  
You can get fresh beans from the store on 18th street.

I have been grinding my beans for years and I just use a basic electric grinder (could be black and decker or cuisinart??) and buy our beans from Costco - java club. Makes delicious coffee. I think any grinder is fine and beans that you like the flavour of. It’s more about the coffee maker with your fresh beans in my opinion

Next time you are in wpg pick up a bag from Stella's, they roast their own beans and it is hands down the best coffee!

The burr grinder is the way to go. Not cheap, but worth it.  
 
The Black Pearl in Winnipeg sources and roasts some amazing coffee. Their signature dark roast blend is amazing!

I used to roast in a hot air popper, but found that unless I did it outside, it created a lot of dark, oily smoke that stuck to everything. Unless the ambient temperature is above 20c, the popper won't get hot enough to properly roast the beans.  
 
If you like ice coffee, then this is a great carafe for cold brewing...
