I am currently 5 weeks pregnant and have been scheduled for my first prenatal appointment in September. I will be 12 weeks pregnant until then. Isn't it a long wait for the first appointment or does the doctor usually schedule you at the end of your first trimester?Its my first pregnancy, so I am quite nervous. Would appreciate any information.

That is 100% normal. They can’t really do too much before that anyway, heartbeat iris hard to detect before 10-12wks anyway. Just watch for severe cramping or spotting. Otherwise, enjoy the ride 4 kids (and counting) and first appointment has always been around 12 wks

your doctor would be able to answer your questions, better than a random person on eBrandon. But I could be wrong.

It’s a bit late, but not totally unusual. I had most of my first prenatal appointments at around 8-9 weeks. One was not until 13 weeks, but I wasn’t too worried as it was my 5th. If you are concerned just phone the doctors office and see if you can move it a bit sooner.

I tried rescheduling the appointment, but they said they have nothing available sooner. I have been referred to Dr Akintola, seems he is a bit too busy.

Unless you’re a high risk pregnancy your first appointment is almost always 12 weeks.

I concur that it's typically around 12 weeks. Which makes sense, there's nothing to do before then really anyway except wait to see if you make it past 12 weeks! (known exception: high risk pregnancies with habitual pregnancy loss due to cervical issues - I have a family member that sees her OB regularly starting 7-8 weeks for that reason)  
 
From a purely pragmatic view point, seeing how most pregnancy losses occur prior to 12 weeks (and there's usually not a darn thing we can do about it, sadly), and supposedly something like 1 in 3 pregnancies results in loss, it makes sense we wouldn't occupy a doctor's time before then. As you say, they tend to be very busy. Most issues that crop up during that time can be attended to by your GP.  
 
Congrats on your pregnancy! Enjoy this time. I have 5 babies and each pregnancy was special and unique, just like the children that resulted from them.

I had one earlier because I was spotting and they checked for ectopic pregnancy

all of the OBs are usually pretty busy. There aren't many in town considering that they do all the deliveries for a big area. I think I had an appointment earlier last pregnancy, but I saw my family doctor for the first while. I think up until around 20 weeks.
