I grew out my natural grey hair and have noticed it can be dry and I've tried different conditoners and some either feel too gunky or like I didn't even apply it lol I thought going grey would be less damage and hassle but it's not at this point. It's growing longer which is good and has shine under some lighting, but why is it so dry and little hairs poking out like they are broken off on the sides underneath ? (mostly noticeable if my hair is up in a pony tail). I haven't cut it in over a year. I blow dry it abit, wash it once/twice a week in winter, but just wear it straight as I saw a lady who ruined her grey hair with a curling iron...so don't want to use that, although I miss curling my hair like I did when it was colored. Anyone have any tips on how they keep their hair soft and what products they find work? I dont want to cut it short. Colored hair felt softer and no little pokey hairs sticking out lol And is there a way to make some curls in my hair without a curling iron?

Are you using a good quality shampoo made specific for grey hair ? Grey hair needs a certain shampoo/conditioner as it’s texture is different.. using typical drugstore shampoos can just ruin grey hair.  
 
You can absolutely curl your hair with a proper heat protectant spray.

My hair is brittle and weak but I dont have grey yet so im not an expert but i wonder if you are missing the deep conditioning you get when you dye your hair? you could go to sallys and see what they have in that regard.  
 
Also If your hair is still growing well i cant see it being that much of an issue occasionally curling your hair, just watch the heat and how long you have the iron on your hair, you just might need a cut a little sooner but you decide if its worth the risk, maybe old school overnight curlers?

I use coconut oil based products. bio silk is great. I have white hair now. Wash less often too.

I also use old fashioned curlers. Dollar store has soft ones that don’t hurt.

have some purple shampoos and regular store shampoos. I've never used a heat protectant spray, do you have any specific brands that work good for you? I never thought of regular shampoos ruining grey hair !

I can just imagine overnight curlers and my cpap machine, what a pretty sight lol

Why have you not cut it in a year???? You need trims to keep the ends fresh and healthy.  
 
I would start there.

chopped the dyed hair off went pixie doing that, so I've just been letting all the natural grey hair grow since Jan 2020.

And ask for a clear colour gloss. It’ll help seal that cuticle and soften it to make it feel the way you like when it was coloured. (My advice as a hairdresser)

Add a avocado mask and a Mrs Roper house coat and you're sure to feel pretty

.......the hair bands you use will break the hair too. I had long hair for many years and had the same problem and then started using clothe ties/scrunches and they didn't damage the hair as much. As for gray, mine is more white and I only shampoo it, soft as can be. But then I shave my hair to about 3/8" long now and love it better than ever!

My grey is dry and staticy - I bought Fructus argon oil and it seems to keep down the fly aways. Its a little green pump bottle.

Your username is neat. I have scrunchies and cloth type bands. I agree with you that some aren't good for the hair. You're lucky to have white hair. When I had the pixie cut it wasn't feminine looking on me but wow short hair gets done fast lol

there store brands that are good for grey hair? I dont drive so getting to Sally's isn't a option at this point lol But like I mentioned I use purple shampoos now and then... I used the ice cream one from shoppers and it made my hair darker grey lol Shimmer Lights is more drying and smells icky... but it is good for removing yellowish from when I used to bleach my hair. I have neutrogena clarifying shampoo that once in a blue moon I use but its stinky and seems to dry my hair too. Even tried the 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner of Pantene and nope lol If I find a way to get to Sally's I'll see what they say and have, but for now appreciate comments here. How come men don't have these problems lol  
So has anyone transitioned from colored to grey hair because of covid or other reasons?

salons do this clear color gloss? And how long does it last? Is it expensive?

I stopped coloring my hair and transitioning to grey almost 2 years ago. It’s been very liberating lol No more worrying about grey roots! I have short hair and my stylist was awesome in helping me make the transition by cutting my hair each month so that the grey blended nicely with what color I had left in my hair. I have used professional hair products sold in my salon for many years and have not had issues with dry hair. In above posts you have been given lots of options to try. My suggestion is to call your salon, or any salon, and speak with an actual stylist and see what they recommend.

I transitioned to grey before COVID because I was tired of colouring it . I had long hair but once the roots got long enough I had it cut short. I don't miss colouring and I have had more compliments on my grey than I did with my coloured hair!
