The Province has done Thursday’s Covid data update. Below is a comparison of that data to the previous update:

BRANDON:
Total cases on dashboard: 1878 (+8)
Active cases on dashboard: 60 (+5)
Recoveries on dashboard: 1794 (+3)
Deaths: 24 (no change)

An outbreak at JR Reid School now displays on the provincial outbreaks listing, a total of five cases. A breakout between staff and non-staff is currently not being given.

The Province advised in today’s Covid bulletin that the outbreak at New Era School has been declared as over.

PRAIRIE MOUNTAIN HEALTH REGION:
Total cases on dashboard: 5235 (+43)
Active cases on dashboard: 200 (+18)
Recoveries on dashboard: 4935 (+22)

This is Brandon’s first Covid death in slightly more than six months (May 23). I would like to express my sincerest condolences to everyone who knew the victim, which data indicates was a female in her 70s.

In a letter to parents pertaining to a number of COVID related topics, the division has indicated that there’s been a case of Omicron in a Brandon school. School isn’t named, though safe to say it’s out there now.

"Additionally, we have been informed that there has been a case of the Omicron variant in a Brandon school. It is our understanding that all individuals associated with the class have been informed of the variant. I felt compelled to share this information given the conversations in our province and in Canada regarding the level of risk for this variant. I felt that families and staff should be aware that the Omicron variant is present in our region. The purpose of the awareness is not to create panic but to provide information for families to make decisions and to reinforce the importance of our continued diligence in maintaining the protective measures"

Release from the province further detailing new measures is at the link below. From the link, changes include:

-private indoor gatherings are limited to 10 additional people plus the household if all are fully vaccinated (youth aged 12 and under are exempt);

-private indoor gatherings are limited to five additional people plus the household if any of the individuals are eligible but unvaccinated (youth aged 12 and under are exempt);
indoor and outdoor sporting and recreation capacity is reduced to 50 per cent for spectators, while games and practices can continue no tournaments will be permitted;
large group gatherings will be limited to 50 per cent capacity with proof of immunization;

-gyms, movie theatres, museums and libraries are limited to 50 per cent capacity with proof of immunization required everywhere except libraries;

-restaurants and licensed premises are limited to 50 per cent capacity and seated service only with a maximum of 10 people per table and proof of immunization required; and

-faith-based gatherings are limited to 50 per cent capacity with proof of vaccination, or 25 per cent capacity or a total of 25 people, whichever is lower, when proof of vaccination is not required.

Omicron

BSD letter to parents this afternoon indicates that there have now been Omicron exposures in three schools, with affected families having been contacted by public health already. Some have made the Linden Lanes letter above public. Meadows has issued a letter indicating that they are another of those three schools. Greater takeaway is that the variant is clearly in the community.

I know of at least a few families that had already decided to take the week off in one school after the series of exposure notices that came out last week. Interesting to note that BSD is making a remote learning option to any parent that would like for these final three days this week. They’re asking people to contact their school for more information.

School holiday break has extended by a couple days. Classes now to resume January 10 in stead of prev Thursday, January 6:
We have been informed by MB Ed that Public Health and Education officials have recommended an extension to the school winter break by two days for students.

Students will resume classes on Monday, January 10, 2022.
