NiteHawk said "I agree that we all must follow the Provincial guidelines, follow social distancing, mask, and vaccinations and adhere strictly to such.
However we do need facts to guide us forward. We should be making decisions based on facts and solid information. When you used your "hypothetical" numbers, they are pure speculation and nothing more.
I think everyone is concerned about over taxing our medical system, so why not have a tally of how many beds are available and how many are occupied by covid patients. If we had a number where we could actually see how close we are to losing our medical system, I think we would all be even more diligent than we already are. I should note that all patients in the hospital are given a covid test. For example if someone breaks their leg and goes to the hospital and is subsequently tested positive for covid, that patient is listed as being hospitalized as covid related. There is a difference between being hospitalized because of covid and hospitalized with covid. Statistics are funny that way.
Again, I think we need facts, not opinions or speculation. We need to make decisions based on facts not emotions.
And yes, we need to evaluate daily as this situation changes, but we are essentially still doing the same things we've been doing since the start, and we aren't having much success.
I also agree that vaccinations help with reducing the severity of covid . I do wish people would not try to shame the unvaxxed, or use social media (like twitter) to mock them. I don't think that tactic has won over any people.. Maybe truth and facts might.. Ridiculing them will definitely not
Above all I wish Brandonites safe health . "
You have a good point. There is a difference between being hospitalized with Covid (your broken leg example) and because of Covid (Covid symptoms are what's sending you to the hospital).
The research is still in progress, but right now it's actually harder to parse those two things apart than it first appears. Anecdotal reports suggest that patients who at first glance are ending up in hospital *with* Covid (someone with a heart attack or a diabetic in distress, for example) are actually having their disease outcomes influenced by the infection.
Early anecdotal reports suggest that Omicron *may be* causing patients with under lying conditions, especially vascular ones, to have their otherwise stable condition to take a turn for the worse. Clots, heart attack, strokes and pulmonary embolism seem to be the most common, along with diabetics (which also causes vascular issues).
Even your broken leg is not quite so cut-and-dried. What if Covid made them dizzy, resulting in a fall that broke their leg? Is that with or because of Covid?
Right now, we have increasing hospital use for all kinds of reasons occurring when health care staffing is suffering. Nursing homes (specifically, Action Marguerite in Winnipeg) cannot maintain anything more than basic services.
