Food allergies these days

Is it just me, or does it seem food allergies are a lot more common these days?
Although I went to a small town school, I don't remember anyone with food allergies...
There certainly wasn't any restrictions when it came to school lunches. I may well have starved to death if peanut butter and salmon was banned!
Now, it seems to be pretty much common to have the peanut/fish ban in schools.
I feel bad for the kids with the allergies, but on the other hand I feel bad for the kids that are missing out on these foods too.
Like I say, I came from a small town, so maybe this has always the case in larger centers.
So, what do you all think? Are things better or worse in regards to food allergies? Could the bans eventually perpetuate the problem by decreasing tolerance?
