Would you hire a Certified Doula?
8/18/2009 at 9:52 PM
For those that don't know, a Doula is an educated birthing support person for women/couples. They Recognize birth as a key experience that the mother will remember all her life. Understand the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor. Assist the woman in preparing for and carrying out her plans for birth, and they stay with the woman throughout the labor. Provide emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the woman get the information she needs to make informed decisions. Facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers. Perceives her role as nurturing and protecting the woman's memory of the birth experience. Allows the woman's partner to participate at his/her comfort level.
With that information, my question to you is, would you hire a Certified Doula? The fee's for a Doula is NOT covered by Manitoba Health and therefore would come out of your own pocket. (approx. $400+ depending on how many pre-natal visits you decide on, but that includes the whole length of your labour and delivery no matter how long it lasts)
