Seeking advice concerning senior with dementia -
8/28/2009 at 9:19 PM
My mother-in-law is in a Personal Care Home and receiving excellent care there. In the last month her dementia has gotten progressively worse and now she is having trouble using her telephone and although she does not know it she is dialling wrong numbers (and sometimes 911 in the middle of the night, although we are having a heck of a time figuring out how she even knows what or who 911 is at this stage of the game, and no, it is not programmed into her speed dial). Her phone is her lifeline and I know that it will be devastating for her if it would have to be taken away. Does anyone know if there is a type of phone, or something a person can do that would allow her to phone one of two or three numbers - and only those numbers. Of course it is a concern that she will call a very long distance, but also that she is disturbing people, and hopefully not in the middle of the night. She is getting very hard to understand so I know that a stranger on the other end of the phone would not know what to do or say.
Thanks again ... as always, any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
