Health care wait times...
2/5/2010 at 12:03 PM
I've never really had to deal with needing special tests or procedures in the Manitoba health care system before now, but could it really be this bad?
My family doctor recommended some specialized tests that can only be performed in a hospital. He's very concerned and the specialist he referred me to has put me on his "urgent" list. So guess what being on the "urgent" list entitles me to in terms of wait time for an appointment in the hospital?
SEVEN MONTHS!!! Geezus, I could be dead by then! This is absolutely unreal. What kind of wait do those getting the tests as part of a routine exam have to endure? This is insane!!!
I think Brock Lesnar was on to something when he called our health care system 3rd world. Maybe not in terms of technology, but it's certainly medieval in terms of wait time.
The worst case scenario for my symptoms is an aggressive cancer... I won't know now until this summer or I die - whichever comes first. Either way, it'll probably be too late for any kind of treatment.
