I learned something new about those healthy (???) chicken breasts
2/9/2010 at 12:13 PM
Last week I started a thread asking where I could find the best buy on chicken breasts. There were a few comments about the unhealthy chicken breasts in the stores. I guess even at my age I can be rather naive ... or maybe too trusting ... and I know that by now I should know better. I generally check the food labels before buying a new product but thought that a chicken breast is a chicken breast ... right??? Wrong!!! Someone (thank you who ever that was) mentioned that before packing these breasts are injected with salt water, so I check the package ... after purchasing.
The ingredients by order on the package are:
chicken breasts boneless, skinless
water,
salt,
Chicken massage na marinade (Glucose solids, salt, modified corn starch, sodium phosphates, high monounsaturated sunflower seed oil, flavour)
sodium tripolyphosphate,
carrageenan (hope I spelled all of those right)
Nutrition Facts per 1 100g breast ...g
Calories 70
Fat .5g
Cholesterol 45 mg
Sodium 620 mg
Carbs 2
Protein 16g
At least it is a product of Canada ... I hope ... I searched the entire box to make sure they did not come from somewhere else, but I have heard that even that is no guarantee.
So this is the last time I will be purchasing chicken breasts and other packaged meat products without checking out the label first.
Thank you to whoever opened my eyes to this ... it is very much appreciated.
