cough suppressant/home remedies

This afternoon I have been coughing non stop to the point of dryheaving due to asthma. The inhalers do not always work. My son comes home and suggests I take a teaspoon of canola oil. I do and the coughing stops. I am amazed this works. Does anyone out there have any other home remedies to offer?
