is this normal medical practice?

i went to the doctor today for ongoing headaches that i decided to finally address. the doctor asked many questions, i answered, and she said ok lets get you on some medication. she then picked up her iphone and typed a couple of words into an app, then scribbled down a prescription and i was on my way.
it really got me thinking, is this normal medical practice? i understand that with the doctors in brandon there is almost always a language barrier, but should they not be familiar with drugs enough to know what to prescribe?
