Meditation

I have been trying to sort through a thousand things in my brain and I just can't do it - my mind keeps racing on!
I am considering taking up meditation, but not only do I not exactly know where to start - I am not sure if it will be worth my time.
My questions to you are:
1) What do you use meditation for?
2) How often do you meditate? And for how long?
3) Does it work? What other things does it affect in your life (positive or negative)
4) Any advice on where or how to try it out.
