I recently bought a shellac light and some gel polish hoping to save some money, but they keep peeling right off. Does anybody have some pointers, or could tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Are you buffering your nails first? The polish needs something to adhere.

I do buffer my nails first, and apply a base coat, polish, then top coat. When I get them done by a salon they last for a couple weeks but when I do them they peel off within a day.

You might be missing a cleaning step. Any oil naturally or applied, may cause a barrier to prevent from adhering to your nail.  
Make sure you use a strong rubbing alcohol to clean them well!  
Also, maybe you may be applying the polish to your cuticle or skin. It wont stay on if you don't have it strictly on your nail.  
Are you using a base coat? Are you using more than needed? Or maybe less?

If you are not a nail tech you don't have access to purchase professional quality products which is possibly one of the many reasons it will not stay on . If you did manage to get professional products you have to be trained on how to use them properly. DIY nails and products are not the same as a salon so don't expect salon results. Not to mention the damage that can be caused by not doing it properly. The gel can peel off layers of your natural nail. Just remember the person who does your nails at a salon has paid thousands of dollars to learn proper application, sanitation and sterilization. You're best bet is to probably pay the $30 every 3-4 weeks at a salon.
