I have had the marina iud in for about 3 years now I decided it was time to get it removed so I went to the midwife I had with my.last pregnancy. Unfortunately she could not remove it and referred me to an obgyn. My appointment isn't until March and I'm worried about it and just want it out. What should I do?

I'm worried about the midwife could not find the strings as it shifted so it's going to have to be surgically removed. Just don't want it causing any damage

If you think it has moved I would be going to my family doctor/walk in and saying that as it could be serious. I'm assuming the OBGYN doesn't know that that's the concern.

I had the mirena IUD in for almost 4 years and when i went to my family doctor to have it removed back in January, he couldnt find the strings either and sent me to an OBGYN and she found the strings right away and removed it within seconds. It felt like an elastic band being snapped against your uterus but otherwise very minimal pain! I have heard of them migrating and needing to be surgically removed though so i would definitely try and push for a sooner date as it could be/become serious.

I will call the clinic tomorrow and see what they say!

Can I ask the reason you wanted it removed in the first place? I had one for a year and loved it, except whenever it was that time of the month, I got a yeast infection. Every month. Has anyone else had this issue? It isn’t listed as a side effect, but I searched around online and anecdotally, others have experienced the same. I had it removed in June and haven’t had the issue since. I’m back on the pill and not liking it as much as the iud, ad the pill is giving me other side effects (acne, breast tenderness). This was the pill I was on prior to the iud and never had these side effects. Now I do. Any alternative suggestions for birth control out there???

Pinkflamingos, as long as the Mirena is in the uterus, it is effective. With the copper IUD, the placement is more important.  
Is a midwife able to order an ultrasound to confirm that it is in the uterus? I am a health care professional, but am not sure if a midwife can order an ultrasound for a non-prenatal woman. If not, then I would see a walk-in MD (or your GP or NP) to inquire about having an ultrasound prior to seeing the OBGyn.
