I can just imagine the conversation.
“Sir, May I see your receipt”,
“No, I don’t have to show you my receipt”,
“ Security could you please take this customer, there is the possibility he is shoplifting”.
Now it could be interesting, you have lost time being taken to prove that you are not shoplifting, which means producing a receipt. So you take offense to their actions, and decide on legal action, more time wasted and no guarantee that you would win.
Asking to see a receipt, and producing a receipt seem like a common sense thing in my mind, because you do know there are shoplifters out there, and a loss to a store results in higher costs to each of us as consumers in that store. "
They had a guy on CBC Radio the other day talking about this. You can refuse to show the receipt and walk out the door. They actually CAN'T detain you unless they have reason to believe you are shoplifting (over and above refusing to produce the receipt), otherwise they can be charged with illegal confinement.
The caveat being that if you refuse to produce receipts when requested, they are allowed to ban you from their property (i.e. you can't shop there anymore), which means you can be arrested and charged with trespassing if you attend the property once banned.
