My wife does work in retail so is dealing with this pandemic and customers pushing boundaries every day! She was laid off early in the pandemic but found herself another position which she loves. In their busy store they are managing to control (within reason ) the inflow and every day still have to remind customers to socially distance, wear masks properly and follow protocol. Currently it’s just another part of the job. Staff can be polite and friendly but they can also be firm and direct, There are no excuses, the rules are the rules. it is difficult but everyone has a part to play, customer, business and staff .
Most staff and businesses are easily be able to recognize special circumstances such as single parent families and accommodate them.
The problem is the people who openly disregard restrictions and protocol putting everyone at risk, and they need to be sent a clear message.
Further I worked in customer facing positions for twenty years prior to becoming self employed. In my experience the ‘awkward ‘ and abusive customer is the one that a business can easily do without.
