Garburator replacement or not
2/5/2016 at 1:03 PM
We have a double kitchen sink with a garburator underneath one of the sinks and the garburator is leaking from the bottom so a seal inside the garburator has failed. The dishwasher drains into the garburator via a flexible hose. I have quotes ranging from $350 to $550 plus taxes to replace the garburator.
If we decided to eliminate the garburator - it would entail some new plumbing work underneath the sink - how involved that would be I don't know.
I don't see a separate breaker for the garburator so it must be on a circuit with some kitchen plugs and lights.
So, I have a couple of questions:
1) Would it likely be cheaper to get rid of the garburator and have the plumbing redone under the sink - the dishwasher would have to drain into the new plumbing somehow?
2) Is a garburator a common item found in most new homes - do most people replace a garburator with a new one or do they eliminate it?
Just looking for some suggestions and input and possible cost if we didn't replace the garburator. Do you have any recommendations for plumbers?
We aren't leaning one way or the other right now - just need some good information before we decide what to do.
Thanks for reading.
