Don't waste your money

Home inspections are, in my opinion, a waste of money and I'll share my experiences to show you why.
My husband and I both entered our relationship owning property. Neither of us had home inspections with those homes, and we both had a good grasp on what issues there were on those houses and did the work accordingly. And they were not new houses - he lived in one that was built in 1906, and and mine was 1947. This was in the early 2000's.
When we moved to Brandon, we sold our properties and bought a house together, again without inspection. Again, it was pretty evident what the issues were with the house, and we invested the money into repairs and updates accordingly.
We had no major issues whatsoever with any of those three properties over years.
Fast forward to 2009, and we've outgrown the house we bought when we first moved to Brandon. We bought a larger home, but this time we had some questions about issues that we could sort of see but were unsure about. We decided to spring for an inspection. The inspectors came highly recommended by several people and were actual tradespeople.
It is now 2017, and we've sunk over $30K into remediating major issues that were never disclosed to us upon purchase (that disclosure form is a joke), and were never identified by the inspectors. Basically, the inspectors only told us the things we could plainly see for ourselves, and didn't tell us any of the things we needed to know. Unfortunately, as a buyer there's no recourse as we would have to prove intent to deceive.
So the moral of the story is, if a property raises red flags for you that you feel requires inspection, that may be a signal that you should just walk away. We don't intend to move at this point (we're too deep in now), but if I were I would skip the inspection.
