I'm a single mom with 2 kids on assistance. I live in a small one bedroom basement suite. I have been on Manitoba Housing waiting list since I have been pregnant with my 2 and a half year old. I need to move and I can afford more then what I am paying now but the kick in the butt is needing a damage deposit and rent for the new place right off the bat... SO I'm wondering if there is anything out there that I can get into that doesn't ask for all the money up front?

Doesn't social assistance provide a one time damage deposit and possibly help with moving costs? Ask your worker. Also check with the 7th street access center, they may have info on housing.

I have already gotten the one time damage deposit and of course you don't get that back till you move.

Most places only need damage deposit when you sign up, then they need one month rent at the day when you move in. You will get back your damage deposite from your current place when you move out which will be the day that you will move in to new place and you can pay for your half month rental with that and half the money you are paying for month rental which you alway pay. So in fact you only need to have been saved your damage deposit money to pay upfront, and get the other one after you move out and put in to the place of your saved money.

About 10 years ago I was on the MB Housing wait list and they gave me some names of other apartment complexes that do subsidized living. I lived in the apartments on 1400 Pacific Ave. I would call and see if they still have some options for you. I also believe the building to the west of that is specifically for subsidy, as well as on the North Hill (Braecrest and Knowlton). Hope this helps!

a landlord has 14 days to refund the damage deposit plus interest, if there is no damage or other issues. if there is any damage or issues, 28 days is allowed.

Thanks slurpeegirl for letting me know. I usually pay back the damage deposit at the same day that they move out. Howeve, couple of times,I regreted that after paying back.  
I still think that if op could save only one dollar per day, she could save about $900 while waiting on the housing list for about 2.5 years now. She could pay for the damage deposite, without being worry now. Just saying. Start saving small today, however hard it seems, otherwise you will be on assistance forever.

Argyle Courts, they are owned by Vionyl Holdings (I dont think i soelled it right..) they base your rent on your income. Go to the 7th street access center and ask for the list of Brandon landlords, they are on that list...hope this helps...as far as MB. Housing goes, I applied as emergency and plain told them I can't afford my rent for the next month and will end up homeless with my son. They had me in a 2 bedroom townhouse in about a month. I also had my disability worked call Housing and state that I needed an affordable place to live, my parents sent a letter also....the squeaky wheel gets the grease, if ya catch my drift! I know for a fact that there is a nice 3 bedroom/1 1/2 bathroom townhouse suite opening up in my complex soon, the tennent JUST left on the 28th. It even had a fenced/grassed yard for the kiddos as well a 2 parks..one on our property and one at the community center just across the soccer field...my son pretty much lives at the parks! LOL!
