We are thinking about getting an African Grey and we wondering if anyone out there has one. What are your experiences and advice about these birds.

I think I recall that the average parrot changes owners 7 times in the course of its life. It's good that you're reaching out and asking questions, because these birds are very demanding.  
 
I have no African Grey experience, but I do have two tame cockatiels, which are nowhere near the level of crazy that a big parrot brings to the table. All I can say is that the reason I have two cockatiels is that when I only had one, he had to be on me ALL THE TIME, pooping on me and chewing up my shirt collars, and while it was awesome to have that bond, it was also really intense. Parrots don't have an off switch, and they will always tell you exactly what they need in that moment.  
 
Do a lot of reading. Bird people are fanatics and there are blogs and info pages all over the internet. Also, go to a pet store and just hang out with the parrots. Petland in Winnipeg has big parrots you can ask to play with. Do this for months before you commit to getting one.

I have been doing tons of research and am home most of the time so that will be a big help! I am just reaching out hoping someone that has an african grey will have some advice.

I am close to someone with an African Grey and also had a parrot myself (it passed away). Parrots are difficult pets. They are extremely needy and have strong personalities. They can and will drive you crazy. You need a high tolerance for stress and noise, and tons of patience. I loved my parrot but I don't usually recommend them. African Greys are super intelligent and are amazing talkers. Do lots of research. I'll point out this thread to my friend. Good luck

Consider adopting one from a rescue. They are very demanding birds and live a long time. Extremely intelligent!

We have already found one...just doing the research...will be going to see her tomorrow...and maybe bringing her home depending how it goes.

I have had an African Grey for 11 yrs and would be happy to have a conversation with you. I'm away until next week but happy to contact you and answer any questions you may have. There is plenty to know and understand about this breed of bird prior to making the commitment. I'll post when I'm home.
