It would depend on the condition of the coat. I'm not a groomer, but have many friends who are. If the coat is not maintained and is matted/pelted, it generally requires a shave down. This can be painful for the dog, depending on how close the matts are to the skin. In order to prevent that and allow a groomer to do a longer cut, ensure you brush your dog daily with the proper tools for the coat.
