Dogs at Wheat Kings game

Now, who's dumb idea is that ? That's mean to put your dog through that commotion leave the dogs at home .

Dogs seem to be aloud more and more in public events.

I’m a dog lover and owner, however I too am somewhat alarmed that many public locations are now permitting the presence of dogs, including Home Depot and Canadian Tire. This very morning I was attending our local dog park and a fellow dog walker was sharing that he has taken his dog to Canadian Tire multiple times. He shared additionally that every time he has taken his dog it has peed on merchandise. This alone is reason to question the practice, additionally many people have a fear of dogs and dog bites do happen.

With so many dogs scared of thunder or loud noises why would you take a dog to a noisy hockey game. You can't put ear protection on them like a child. What about the people that are allergic to dogs they won't be able to attend now. If owner starts cheering or yelling at a game and dog misinterprets that as someone is hurting owner and bites someone dog owner maybe face a fine or possibly have to put dog down.

Are you referring to the Pucks and Paws game?
If so, do you realize that arenas/ stadiums/ etc in the province, country, and world wide have been doing similar events for years?
Have you actually looked into the details of it? I would guess not, since there is misinformation on this thread already.
Dog owners sign a waiver. There are only 2 dog friendly zones; anyone who has a ticket in those zones already (ie- season tix etc) and does not want to be in a section with dogs, can ask to move to another seat. Dogs are leashed at all times, and not allowed in the entire arena.
While I am sure that there have been incidents at similar events, I presume they have not been common or else these types of events would not continue. I would wager a guess that the number of incidents among human fans at sporting events is far greater, especially if alcohol is involved. Venues haven't stopped serving fans copious amounts of alcohol, despite alcohol fuelled fights.
I have attended the Gold Eyes Bark in the Park on more than one occasion in Winnipeg. It has been an extremely fun event, and I personally would continue to support such events in the future. I would suggest that if you don't want to attend an event with dogs, either don't go or don't sit in the 'dog' section. And if your dog would behave poorly, don't take you dog. All owners and dogs were very well behaved at the games I attended.

If the dogs had a voice or a choice I'm sure they would choose to stay home I just feel sad for them that they can not make their own decision .

Have you ever actually been to an event like Pucks for Paws, Bark in the Park, etc?
Have you ever owned a dog? If my dog had his 'choice' of what to do, he would be rolling on rotting dead animals, or eating horse poop, or maybe still running around the streets of Brandon like he was before he was caught by animal control and rescued. It is our responsibility as owners to care for, train, and socialize our animals. Some dogs have 'jobs', but many are owned strictly for companionship. My dog thoroughly enjoyed the companionship of attending Bark in the Park with me.

There is a world of difference between an event like Bark in the Park or Pucks for Paws, and just having dogs at a random hockey game.

As a dog owner who is actually nervous around unfamiliar dogs, I would avoid events like that because I would expect dogs there. I wouldn't expect dogs at a regular game.

So unless it was in fact Pucks for Paws or something, the dog had no reason to be there.

It might be our responsibility to care, train and socialize their dogs, but like I've said before, most dog owners are like most drivers. They figure they're average or better than average. By definition, fully half of them will be worse than average.

I'm pretty sure dogs aren't allowed at random Wheat Kings games, except for service dogs.
Pucks and Paws is this weekend, and while Ruby didn't confirm that's what they were talking about, that's what I thought was most likely.
One of the good things that organizers do for events like this, is to assign certain sections for dogs - so you would be able to avoid any dogs you wanted to.

You haven’t met our pup

For clarification, it’s a one off game tonight called Pucks N Paws in three designated sections on each side at the end of the rink only. Here’s all the info:

Between this and some of the getting ramped up over dogs in the department store, I still think the missing link here is the fact that generally the dogs that end up in public places are the ones that are socialized. An owner with a not socialized/aggressive dog isn’t going to want to deal with it in a situation like this (especially with the waiver that’s being signed). If not sure, don’t approach or pet a strange dog… but if it’s an irresistibly cute pup that you’re powerless not to pet it’s usually just a case of reading/asking the owner if it’s okay. Owners know their dog and will generally fill you in on any tendencies.

Overall imo a fun promo done within boundaries that give it a chance to create some good memories.

Cats have paws? There are cat's who are very social, leash trained and very comfortable in public. What about a night for cats?

This is just a rhetorical question.

Most cat's also could care less about going to a hockey game or being with their owner all the time. Cat's would be shoving their owner out the door so they can be alone at home.

Judging by the picture on the front page of today's Brandon Sun, all the fears about dog attacks at the hockey game were a gross overreaction! Time to relax folks.

I feel that people are taking their dogs to stores claiming it's to socialize them when in reality they just haven't trained their dogs to stay home alone.

Point I was trying to make is that dogs that are taken to the hockey game (or store, etc) are generally ones that dont have the kinds of behavioural problems that lead to the bad stuff that's driving some of the fear responses we're seeing here. I think there might be a gap in some cases where some dont fully appreciate the different personalities dogs have and how an owner usually has a very good read on those and doesnt want to put themselves or their dog in a bad situation any more than anyone else wants to be in that situation.

In the case of this thread, if the topic is the Wheat King game and the owner goes as far as signing a waiver then you can be confident within pretty high level certainty that the owner knows their dog and that it isnt the type to randomly lunge at people.

Many people don’t realize that most dog foods contain peanut oils and dog saliva can cause anaphylactic shock in people with peanut allergies. This is one of the reasons only CERTIFIED support animals are allowed in schools. Not to mention people who are allergic to animal dander.

In the USA people have been able to take their dogs into Cabellas and Bass Pro for as long as i can remember.
The dogs love it, the patrons love them and the business workers love the dogs.
The dogs get approached cautiously by strangers who always ask if they can pet the dog.
And in the pet toy department the dogs talk to each other.
Maybe non dog owners should learn some etiquate about approaching dogs.

Anyone who would like to avoid contact with a dog at a sports event where they will be present (like the Paws and Pucks event and others like it) simply needs to sit in a section where there are no dogs present. Very easy to do.
And I am happy to have read that the event was great for all involved!

There are good dog owners and there are bad dog owners. And people all think their pet is cute.

No animals except support animals (I mean real support animals) need to be allowed in stores especially any store with food which is almost all stores now.

It is disgusting to think of stuff floating in the air. Anyone who has a dog knows that dog hair goes everywhere. So, perhaps, think twice about buying that fruit when you see a dog walking by.

Responsible dog owners would leave their dogs at home.

An event which is designated a dog event yes dogs are allowed. If not, dogs shouldn't be there or perhaps for hockey games as seats are close together they need to buy an extra ticket just like parents have to buy a ticket for their kids.

In a store that caters to pets, yes all pets are welcome.

Not sure when I have a dog I can go anywhere with a dog mindset started.....

I have owned a dog for over 20 years until she passed away.

Many people are scared of dogs. Even myself who owned a dog. I went to my husband's boss part. They thought their dogs were cute and safe so didn't put them away outside. I was walking to house with my 2 year old son to the house when the 2 very big German Shepherds attacked us and as bite me so hard on my arm that their teeth went right through my winter jacket, sweater and into my skin. Luckily my son was not injured.

Exactly. If a dog is not trained to be left alone due to separation anxiety or any other psychological deficiency, it is not socialized. I do not want that unpredictability anywhere near me!

If I want to meet a dog - I will get a dog - I don't want a dog. I avoid dog parks on hikes, just as I avoid any other public places with dogs. Dogs and waivers at hockey games? In attending a hockey game, without a dog, I should be the one signing the waiver and release of liability of anyone but the dog owner. The guy dragging his dog into a game, should be purchasing an insurance policy, in addition to ticket, against the occurrence of any dog- related incident in the facility.
