While it is great to have pets and cost of living in your own house is getting more expensive I don’t think that people owning private properties should be forced to allow non service animals in. Even a decent renter who will clean/ pay for damages caused by pets still can cause a loss in revenue for a section of people who are already at a loss. It also doesn’t seem to lay out extra costs associated with pet rentals, damage/ pet deposits, extra insurance. And what support the landlord will have when things go wrong.

Get written permission from the landlord.  
If the landlord allows you to keep a pet in your rental unit,  
make sure you get their permission in writing. Ask them to  
add a clause to your tenancy agreement that says your pet is  
allowed to live there and any conditions set by the landlord.  
As well, make sure that any “no pets” clauses are removed from  
the agreement. If you already have one pet and would like to  
get another, talk to your landlord to make sure it’s okay.

I am a homeowner, landlord and pet lover.  
I would never allow a tenant to have a pet.  
 
Pets have accidents. They throw up, pee and have diarrhea on carpet and expensive hardwood floors. They scratch, they leave marks. They cause damage.  
 
I rented for many many years and although I wanted a pet so bad I knew that the responsible thing would be to wait until I owned my own home to have one. I could NEVER give up a pet simply because I rented an apartment that did not allow pets.  
 
Unfortunately owning a pet is not a right and landlords should not be forced to allow them in their property.
