Looking for advice on blind dogs
11/5/2009 at 9:28 AM
My dog will be losing her sight as she has genetic glaucoma (there's a fancy word, but I can't remember it.) She has already lost one eye and she will lose sight in the other likely within the next couple of years. She's fairly young, almost 5 years old, so she'll probably be blind for a good third of her life.
I have heard many people tell stories about blind dogs they've met that do just fine. And I'm sure my smart girl will adapt to life without sight. However, I'm wondering if anyone has advice on how to help her adjust. What can I do to make her life easier? (Other than not move furniture, I've figured out that one.) What changes/adjustments should I expect?
My dog is my child and I have no problem putting time into working with her.
I will be consulting with my vet. But I'd also like some insight from pet owners who've been there, done that.
