introducing another pet

I was wondering how long to give one female adult cat to get used to a male kitten. There has been just a lot of hissing and low moaning sounds usually from the female. She has been with us for at least a year now. And I know Bella, the female, is NOT pleased with me and won't even let me hold her anymore. So just wondering about a time line or any suggestions. Thanks
