Retrievers 'missing' from Souris and surrounding areas

Just was approached by a woman at the post office today. I had my lab in the truck with me and she knocked my window to alert to the fact that there have been several retrienver type dogs go missing in the area lately. She said the vet clinic would have more info.
I called the vet clinic and she said they have signs up for at least 5 missing reteivers from rural areas around Souris. No one knows if it's a coincidence or not.
Just a heads for those in the areas. I am new to the area and this is the first I have heard of it.
Is this new or has anyone else heard anything? Those poor families and their dogs.
