how do i keep a dog from digging holes!?

We have a few friends that have big dogs, and we always welcome their dogs into our home and we sometimes dog sit for one of his friends while he's at work. Recently one of the dogs started digging a hole. My boyfriend refilled the hole and packed it down... Only to find out the next day the hole was bigger than before!! How can we keep the dog from digging huge holes in our back yard? Any suggestions?
