I have a cat that I need to get rid of. I have tried finding a permanent home for her, but I have no takers. She is 14 years old and I am ok with having her put down. I called the pound and they said that the animal control has a fee. Does anyone know how much that is?

If the cat is sick, take it to the vet. Have them put her down.

Does it cost a lot to put a cat down at the vet?

I'm not sure if this could work...but if she is healthy, we could possibly give her a forever home. I have a couple of questions about her. We have older cats right now living out their final years...lol.

What's so funny about cats living out their final years? Why did you "lol"? I am confused and not laughing.

I wrote lol for a couple of reasons...lol.  
 
I thought it was ironic that we too have cats in their latter years. (Hoping it would be a good fit)  
 
Nothing's wrong with animals living out their final years, it's quite wonderful actually...as long as the animal is healthy and happy.  
 
I guess I also laugh...mostly at myself because I'm such a softie. It's what I do...take in other peoples animals. Otherwise why would I have 18 rabbits of other people. And the one dog we have. And the chickens I have. And a 34 year old horse...lol.  
 
When I mentioned this to my husband...he just asked "when are we picking it up?"  
Life's too short not to enjoy it.

You are a wonderful woman mandy6. I cannot for a minute think of giving up one of my cats in its final years. No matter what circumstance! I hope the cat is a fit.

Mandy6 sounds like you and your husband have big hearts. Nice to hear in this day and age!

I think most people just think we're a little bit insane...lol!! We do a lot of out there things, like driving 2 hours to give a home to a toothless cat years ago. (he was that old) He lived for several years with us...on soft food until he passed  
 
But thank you so much for your kind words. We have taken in a lot of pets and strays over the years...and returned many animals to their owners, which has very rewarding. I'm super lucky that my husband's a big sweetie and supports the craziness...lol. And we're just lucky to have the ability and room.  
 
And you're right, it IS hard for people to give up a cherished pet. I don't think it's easy for anyone. But sometimes things change for people, we don’t have any judgments about that. I always try to keep previous owners updated about their previous pet. I always hope it makes thing easier.

I don't normally comment on ebrandon but I had to after seeing your comments Mandy6. You and your husband are awesome people! I'm a huge animal lover and this just makes me happy. I hope one day my husband and I can do the same! All pets deserve to be happy and loved no matter what age they are! You are an inspiration  

you have a heart of gold! I have taken in a few rescue dogs myself and it is not easy taking in an older animal. But knowing that you are giving them "the best" in their final years(days) is a good feeling. But still it is not easy losing part of the "family".  
Your offer of taking in this cat is very touching and you are an inspiration!

for any of you posting about the big hearts her and her husband have, you have no idea...I know her personally, and they have mega huge hearts, very caring, loving people, especially for animals. people too, of course!  
 
good on ya Mandy6, and what TrevorB said, about a seniors care home for animals is definitely an interesting thought, cause your place does fit the bill.

Nobody has questioned why the poster wants to get rid of the 14 year old cat and the OP has not to my knowledge said the reason.  
 
Cats can live amazingly long lives.  
 
I read that the cat is 14 and does anyone know how much the fee is to Have her euthanized or the fee for someone else to do this.  
 
OP, maybe state why you want to get rid of the cat after 14 years?  
 
There are some very kind souls in this City that care very much, but I'm wondering why the 14 year old cat needs to go or be euthanized in the first place.

cat showing signs of illness, cancer, or any other life inhibiting conditions that requires the cat being put down? Just because a cat is 14 doesn't mean it's at the end of it's life. Our cats were 17/18 years old when they passed on.

Thank you to everyone for the lovely things being said! We appreciate everyone's sentiments...but we’re just regular people. Many others do the same. We just try to help out and do the best we can like most people.

My cat turns 18 this spring and she's still going strong.  
 
It's just so hard to believe there's so many humans out there with such a disregard for the life of their pets.

I don't think most people have a disregard for their pets. I think having a pet for many years is wonderful and shows great commitment.  
 
But life isn't scripted and even with the best laid plans things don’t always turn out like one expects. Kids grow up, lifestyles change, circumstances change and sometimes people see that the pet can have a better life in a different home.  
 
I don't see any of the pets we've taken in being sad and missing their owners. Things are a bit different for them...but they adapt very quickly and seem quite happy about their new life. It’s not the end of the world for them…it’s an exciting new beginning.  
 
I’ve haven't met anyone yet who didn’t care about their pet when they were going to a new home. Most people are still concerned about their pet’s well-being years down the road.  

I have no problem with people re-homing their pet as they see fit. What I take issue with is the OP killing (euthanizing) her 14 year old cat instead of re-homing him or her. If the cat is healthy and alive, why not let it live?

The OP does say that they tried to find another home but are having no luck. Sound like euthanizing it is a last resort.

My friend has the cat now, but she can't keep her. My husband is allergic to cats and I'm not, so that is why I need to find a permanent home for her or I have to put her down. My husband and I are Also expecting our first baby in less than a month. Since my husband is allergic and I'm not I don't want to get my baby sick and I can't handle a baby and pets at the same time. Thank you to those who did not criticize my option and also being open minded. For those of you who think that I'm not a pet lover well your wrong and I hope that you learn to become more open minded. For years before I moved in with my husband, I did live on my own and the cat lived with me for a few years. Thank you to Mandy6 for reaching out to me and possibly giving me another option.

There are so many other options than euthanasia for pets now (unless they are very ill or injured ,and have no quality of life)  
Just because a pet is elderly, doesn't mean it's still not going to be living for a long time. All of our family pets have lived 16+ years. We have had and currently have all different breeds of dogs in our family and our current kitty has one eye, a heart murmur, one kidney and is 14 1/2 yrs and still acting like a crazy kitten.  
A senior pet sanctuary would be great around here! There are quite a few in north america that can be followed on facebook: Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary, Muttvillie Senior Dog Rescue, and one of my favs, Happy Homes For Senior and Special Pets. There are so many more too. Many of them are sanctuary's/shelters for senior pets and also try to adopt them out. Very cool if we had something like this in our area!  
Too many people give up on older pets for different reasons and the pet deserves to have its longest quality of life possible! If the shoe was on the other 'paw' would they 'put you down' or find you another living arrangement? Karma! I also realize vet care is not affordable for all , especially when the pet begins to get older or has a health problem. But this is something top consider before you get a pet: can I afford it? any way, thats my two-kibbles worth.

I am happy to hear that others have some old cats as well. My cat Cleo is 17 and she still acts like a kitten sometimes. When I moved out of my parents home I made sure that I could bring her with me. She has saved my parents and my life at least once in her life.  
 
I also have a hard time with taking animals home as I love them all. I volunteer at the humane society here and there and have a difficult time to not take them home. On more than 1 ocassion I wanted to at least take them home for the weekend. Even pets of family and friends take a special spot in my heart.  
 
There just might be something about being loved unconditionally by them.

Thanks for your explanation of your situation. As Mandy said situations change, finances change. We took in an older dog that had belonged to a friend. She became ill, could not work and was having financial problems. When her 11 year old dog (which she had from a pup and gave nothing but the best for all those years) became ill and needed costly tests and eventually costly medication, she just couldn't do it. We took the  
dog for the remaining 3 years it lived.  
 
So to those who say you shouldn't get a pet unless you can afford it, I hope you are never in the situation our friend was.  
 
When our friend passed away from cancer 3 months after her beloved dog, the dog's ashes were buried with her.
