I agree 100% with adopting or rescuing a dog! I have adopted through Funds for Furry Friends, and had an excellent experience.
I also urge you to do some research into different types and ages of dogs - you mentioned Golden Retriever and Pug, which are two breeds with very different needs as far as food, grooming, exercise, veterinary expenses, etc. Here's a good article from a local vet:

Be sure to talk to friends who have dogs, meet their dogs and spend some time with them. Don't be in a rush, the more time and effort you put into research ahead of time, the better match you are likely to get!
