I saw this out at Park Lake in Neepwawa and haven't seen one before. Google was no help. Anyone know what this is. I attached a couple of pics.

I saw one of these flying overhead early last night as the storm was approaching near Cowessess, and figured it was some kind of Merganzer. Given the distinctive head shape and all. But haven't seen any of those outside of northern Ontario.  
Are Cormorants prevalent in the area?

I see a few every summer. Not many, though.

The first time I saw a cormorant was about 20 years ago after a huge wind. If I remember right there had been a hurricane in the states and we were feeling the aftermath. We found a dead cormorant in the corrals. At first we thought it had been blown in from the south They have an amazing hook on the ends of their beaks. After finding that one I soon learned that these birds are fairly common near water. If you travel #2 through Souris you will often see them sitting on the rocks in the creek on the west side of town. I nicknamed that location Cormorant Corner.

No, I don't think Cormorants are good eating at all, actually. The other day I saw a bird I wasn't sure of the identity - it was sitting up in the top of a dead tree. On further investigation, it was an immature Cormorant - their bellies are quite light, and the orange patch under the chin is quite visible. Not sure why the silly youngster was up so high in a tree, though!
