This is going to sound heartless but I'm just wondering what people do with their dogs when they have constant seizures (my dog has seen the vet) when they have to go to work and live life...I'm worried about her being alone or going through the doggy door and having one outside and being left there...anyone else gone through this before and if so what did you do?

Get a larger size than you need crate, pad it with blankets and make it a safe place. That way if you have stairs and don't want to close up the doggy door your fur baby will be safe.

There may be medication that can help. Only the vet would know if the type of seizures that your dog is experiencing can be treated with meds. If it is epilepsy, for instance. If it is some other medical condition, they should be able to offer suggestions as to the safest place for your dog while unattended. Sorry that your pup is going through this. My childhood dog had epilepsy and his seizures were sad to watch. (He wasn't on medication). He was completely exhausted afterwards.

my dog has been having seizures almost weekly for over a year now. the vet said nothing could be done. it sure hurts to see her go through this. she doesn't cry or look like she's in pain. sometimes i wonder if it bothers me more than her. vet says she isn't really aware of it happening. i have thought of putting her in a cage but what if her foot gets caught through the bars? or she has anxiety and freaks out? the vet said to just let her do her thing and she will get up when she is done...so that is what we are doing....we sit by her and tell her she's a good girl..etc...but was told kennel was a bad idea...

Must depend on what is causing the seizures? I had a little dog that had seizures, he was on medication for years, then one day I just forgot to refill it and that led to a few days... he's never had a seizure since

I had a big dog that had seizures. we tried meds but could not find any that worked. The vet told me the more he has the worse they will get. And she was right. He went from having them once every 2 weeks to having them every 2 days to have them back to back. They were lasting 10 mins. He would then get up for a few mins and then have another.. Sadly we put him to sleep. u just has to listen to your pup and see how u think he is handling them and do the best u can for him/her..

Our beagle has had major seizures for years. He takes 2 medications twice daily to try and control them and another we give him during a seizure to help stop it. His are very severe, and without intervention can last 45 minutes to an hour.  
We know FOR SURE that he has had seizures when nobody is home. We just know that there is nothing we can do about that. We do not kennel him, because the way he flips around, he could probably do more damage. The stairs always worry me, but he has not hurt himself on them yet. This has been going on over 5 years.  
We have done a lot to help control his seizures, but they will never completely go away. He really has no idea it's happening and is still a happy puppy.

For everyone's responses. I feel so helpless and wish I could stay home all day and tend to her. I have to go to work though and I feel so bad leaving her and worry about her passing away. The meds make her so drowsy and she runs into things. The vet said she should be back to normal in about two weeks she had six seizures in four days but didn't have one last night so that was good. If the meds do not work it could be a brain tumour and a scan is only available in sask for 2500.00

Our eleven year-old shepherd has had severe epilepsy (although controlled with meds) all her life: long term potassium bromide (combined with phenobarbital) use to control them had effected her tendons and ligaments to the point we were looking into surgery to fuse her wrists.  
 
After researching cannabis oil use to control seizures, we found a naturopathic vet that encouraged us to try supplementing her meds with the oil, and the result has been nothing short of amazing. The oil has allowed us to completely take her off phenobarbital, and we're slowly reducing her potassium bromide dose to see if she can get off of it all together. She's been seizure free since the switch 6 months ago.  
 
She'a much more alert, active, and generally enjoying life way more. I know this sounds a bit granola, but I would highly encourage you to read up on the use of cannabis oil and decide for yourself if that might be something to try.

our basset hound had seizures for 14 years before he passed away last year , we gave him his pills , every day , he would be good for a couple weeks them he would get one , all i did was hold him for awhile , then he would just better and walk away like nothing happen to him.
