Wondering what some remedies are for a teething 6 month old pup.. I've given her tons of toys, but she destroys them and or loses them. In the last two days she has destroyed our three outdoor extension cords for our vehicles.. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!!!

Kind of dog? I used bully sticks - you can get some thicker ones at the pet store on Park... last longer the thicker they are! Kongs filled with treats and frozen is good! I also bought a ball from the TSC store on the hill ... think it's meant for horses but it's got a handle on it and it's heavier then a normal ball...

You can give a puppy many toys: but you have to correct the chewing behaviour or redirect behaviour. You may lose many more extension chords, vehicle tires, shoes, baseboards etc. I have proved "indestructible dog toys" are not so indestructible. I had a power chewer as a puppy and still is a power chewer. I do recommend the Kong Power Chewer products: hard to find an assortment in town but easy to find online. Good Luck!

She is a German shepherd. I'm not a fan of scolding my pets so I really have no idea how to discipline her without scaring her. I'm hoping she just grows out of it

I found a solution that worked great with my border collie pup. Take an old facecloth and get it wet. Put it in the freezer. When the pup wants to chew, give it the frozen cloth. They will chew on the frozen cloth for quite awhile and the cold will soothe their gums. Also gave my puppy ice cubes to chew and that helped too. Used to keep a few frozen cloths in the freezer for her.

I have a 100lb 7month old GSD. You cave to correct your dogs unwanted behaviour, or it will not know that his chewing behaviour is wrong.  
Rope toys, and tennis balls (buy lots) work well during teething.  
They don't call them German Shredders for nothing.  
Luckily, we were on our GSD, and never chewed anything other than his toys.  
Be the Alfa, or your dog will.

I think your puppy is bored. My "puppy" is near 18 months old. A Weiner dog that chews everything but bricks. Yep metal is no issue. I tried deflection and well you name it. I think my pup is bored. She has destroyed/eaten the near everything.  
 
She is smart. I think toys are simply a keep the dog busy thing. She needs more.

notorious chewers as puppies. they love to push to see what they can get away with. if they know they aren't allowed to do something they will test you to see what the boundaries are. You have to teach them that you are the alpha or they will assume that roll. It takes a lot of correcting and even more important " supervision " you have to be there in the first few months to be able to teach them not to chew on things. They are one of the smartest breeds that are very stubborn and like to be in control if allowed. So be the alpha, correct their behavior, spend lots of time with them and most importantly be patent with them. Because in the end they will be the best dog you have ever had.

Oh I absolutely love her, regardless of these little mishaps. She is just a doll.we are starting her in puppy classes come April so I'm hoping this will make a huge difference, I'm very excited.

Reward good behaviour. Redirect unwanted behaviour. If you do not know how to do this attend puppy classes. Disciplining physically, verbally or scolding your dog will not work. Joanne at the Paw Resource and Wellness Centre has great exercises for you and puppy to work on together: they offer classes and provide you with handouts so you can keep practising at home. Worth investing the time, money and your energy on. You and your puppy will establish a great bond-reward itself!

We took our dog to puppy school that was all about rewarding your dog for good behaviour only. That is fine for certain breeds but some dogs need to know you are the alpha. You don't need to yell at your dog. In fact you can teach your dog and be the alpha just by simple commands and non verbal cues. While I'm not a fan, there some good principles in Caesar the dog whisperer guy's lessons.

We used empty pop bottles with the air squeezed out. Worked great for us.

Have all loved to get pop bottles caps off and chew on the bottles. Just make sure they don't eat any of the bottle or caps.

A GSD, they will learn not to trust you. You just have to use a stern voice. Not yelling, they are like a stubborn child and won't listen to you yelling. Talk in a stern voice and use constant phrasing in your commands. Very important not to use different words or phrases to get them to do the same thing. and using positive feed back when they do something right your pup will learn and become the best pup you've ever had.

My dog was awful as a pup, he was lacking exercise and took it out on his toys, destroying everything except a few. The black Kong extreme he was never broken, you can fill it with treats etc as well. Playing tug of war worked for him too and vented energy.
