With our household getting a new puppy this summer the question has come up when is the best time for our girl to get spayed. We have asked our vet on his thoughts as well as friends and family as well as other dog owners so we thought we would ask all you ebrandon folks as well and see what the consensus is here! We have a large breed puppy ( Lab Cross). We have read there are both pros and cons to both early and later spaying. So any input on the subject and how old your pup was when you got her spayed would greatly be appreciated! Thanks.

I've been told over the last 30 yrs that large breeds should wait until close to the one yr mark....but if they hit heat prior to and are bred by accident it can be a not so nice experience. So I've always aimed for the 9/10 mth mark. Good luck with your new furbaby

I would suggest asking a couple of vets for their professional opinions vs the "professional" opinions of eBrandon users. Most vets will have a similar suggestion within 2-3 months of each other. Best wishes for you and your pup and thank you for spaying/neutering your pets!

My vet said to do it right before her first heat as this cuts the chances of certain cancer (can't remember what it is called). Best to decide with a vet though!

we also have a lab cross. she is also one of the females that has juvenile vaginitis. this is essentially that she doesn''t have a strong enough immune system to fight the natural bacteria in her female area. because of this I have done a lot of research on when to spay her. I will be spaying her around 10 months I think. if you wait to long it increases the risk that your dog can develop breast cancer. all the research I''ve done said for large breed between 8 months and one year. and if you spay to early it can result in incontinence which is basically your dog would piddle without control. I would follow what your vet recommends for your puppy tho cause each dog is different.
