What the heck was that????

Was driving home around 5 like a lot of people through the storm that was popping up. After the heavy quick rain had ended, there was an ominous extremely low-hanging cloud over top of part of the city that appeared to have some element of rotation to it.
We drove North on 26th street and turned before the train tracks West onto Pacific. All of a sudden there were what looked like some crazy localized wind gusts that uprooted a large tree in front us in front of the apartment blocks there and downed another tree right in the area. The few cars in the area had to pull over as there was no way to see clearly enough to drive.
We didn't see anything funnel-esque but I'd be interested to hear a weatherperson explain what just happened...
