Has there been any word on whether Collyers is going to rebuild/reopen?  
 
Just got a flyer from them in the mail today.

If you are getting flyers they were probably printed before the fire. I doubt he would have intentionally handed those around after this weekends events.  
 
As for rebuilding. No idea. I know Christie's is already looking to rebuild some where and the boxing club is trying to raise money for a rebuild.

I assume the boxing club was a tenant in that building and they had insurance along with everyone else, i'm not sure why they would need to raise money?

There were 3 businesses in that little strip mall. Collyers, Brandon Boxing Club and Kazic Kontracting. I’m sure the mall (owners of the building) has insurance, but it’s up to each tenant (the 3 businesses) to have content insurance. Brandon Boxing Club did NOT have insurance. the operator of BBC has already said on fb that he had no insurance.  
No idea about the other two, but I would think they would have insurance.

That is fairly negligent most leases especially commercial leases require proof of insurance. I recently had a commercial leases space that required over a million dollars of insurance just to get the keys.

But if you have a business and do not have insurance,, I have no sympathy for you. As an individual I am expected to maintain my insurance for my home, car, loans, etc. Insurance should be a top priority for anyone/business.

I agree that it is negligent. On the go fund me it says “he did not insure the contents of the BBC as the monthly premiums would have been a burden on the club”. I hope they have liability insurance for if something happened to someone on their property (considering it’s a sport where people could get hurt). Kind of eye opening for sure, on the importance of insurance.

I totally agree that not having insurance is extremely negligent on the part of the business owner. The BBC has been around for a while.. has he never had insurance over the years? Nobody expects anything to happen but that is the point of insurance. By not having insurance you’re taking a huuuge gamble with your livelihood.

Many business make. Pay the insurance premiums(which can get quite high) or hope the odds are in your favour and nothing happens. I'm glad I'm not a business owner that has to make that choice.

The owners of the building itself had insurance... but much like anyone who rents an apartment, someone who rents commercial/business space is in the same boat, they should get tenants/contents insurance to protect their assets. Yes it has been made public knowledge through a go fund me campaign bbc didn't have that, but sadly some people have to learn a tough lesson. I'm sure he is regretting that choice and he is trying his best to come out of this stronger than ever. No need to make him feel worse if he is reading this. My previous post wasn't made to put a target on the guy's back who lost 17 years of his life in that club. So you can either support the rebuild or don't. No need to be hasty about it.  
 
The OP was asking about Collyer's, yes I strayed slightly from answering the question, but at the same time I answered it with other info I knew.  
 
Back to the original topic now.... anyone know if collyer's has plans to rebuild?

Tenants insurance is about $200/year...and as an individual they also are expected to maintain insurance for their cars/home/loans etc? Should insurance have been a top priority for them? should we halt all the hashtag fund raising and donations or do we just single out a guy who was doing his best to keep a dream of his afloat? That guy truly cared about his business and what he did and with all of the gyms/crossfits/MMA clubs it couldn't have been easy keeping the lights on. In the early days, way back when we were trying to catch our stride I let insurance lapse...because it was at the back of the list after hydro/rent/etc.

I don't know who is underwriting your tenant policy, but I have a policy through Wawanesa Mutual with $25,000 coverage and it only sets me back about $110/year. For such a nominal amount of money, people would be crazy NOT to carry tenant insurance.
