Could really use my bike back. I know BPS is checking serial numbers. I don't know what the solution is to bike thefts.  
 
I am always warning people to lock their bikes up and consider using something more secure than a cable lock.  
 
Be good if bike shops and dealers could get in on the bike theft issue and make products available that are more theft proof.  
 
The other idea I have is a bike registry where people put their serial numbers on a blockchain with proof of purchase & pictures.  
 
Bike companies could get more creative with bike identification: have scratch proof QR codes that can't be painted over.  
 
There could be laws made to prevent people from blacking out bike frames: forcing those bikes into inspection or seizure due to theft concealment.  
 
Another anti-bike theft idea is to put transmitters in bike tubes: have bikes monitored at a base station.  
 
Right now, I won't ride a bike worth more than 100 bucks. It's not worth having to use giant chain or link locks bc it's a hassle.  
 
Just riding an old beater for now.

We don't even leave them outside anymore. Locks aren't good enough so what other choice to we have? My fiance has a super expensive bike and no way we ever leave it out. It got stolen once and luckily returned. But yeah since we don't even leave em out. Sad days we live in

When I was a kid bicycles needed licence plates. The city kept your serial number on file. Not sure why they stopped it.

the city license plates too. We had all six of our bikes stolen last year and like the OP are now riding 10$or less bikes just to avoid the same mistake twice plus we didn't have the ability to bring in six bikes to avoid this. They were locked up with a chain but it wasn't heavy enough for the bolt cutters.

having bikes locked up in a locked garage isn't enough today. My brother had 2 bikes stolen, both were pretty new. Yet my old bike was never touched. Need to hookup an electric fence transformer and shock the heck out of the thief. And get the most powerful one you can get.

Hey there's an idea lol or how about electrical charged chain and lock lol one that shocks the heck out of the person trying to steal the bike.

I am not sure if that is a great solution. Easily ground out or shorted. Maybe if you are cattle. Umm..I know that lawsuits are a thing: so ill leave that one alone.

Nothing serves as a better deterrent to this than a camera. Or a poster with a picture of a huge eye.

I read not too long ago, that at least in Winnipeg, that bikes are basically being used as currency by meth users. They end up in chop shops and I guess sold on to scrap dealers, etc.

Abby is correct. Neighbors had 3 of their bikes stolen. About 2 weeks later they found out that 2 of them were used as currency is a drug transaction. I don’t know if it was meth or not, but this is what I was told.

Bummer. Hate being with out the bike.  
 
You will want a quality motion alarm. Not a cheap China made one that goes off ever time the wind blows.  
I saw some on eBay and Amazon for reasonable price. Was going to order a few to test them and do a review.
